A First for Queensland – A Complete Offering of Surgical Robots Land in Brisbane

December 2020

Friday 4 December 2020

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, who is part of the St Vincent’s Health Australia group, has changed the surgical landscape in Queensland by unveiling a new state-of-the-art robotic system.

As a first for Queensland, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside offers Surgeons a complete suite of surgical robotic technology by introducing the new ROSA Knee System to complement the existing Mako System and Da Vinci Robot.

The ROSA Knee System supports surgeons in performing Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) with features to assist with the bone resections, as well as assessing the state of the soft tissues to facilitate implant positioning intraoperatively.

On Monday 30 November, one of St Vincent’s senior orthopaedic surgeons performed the first robotically assisted total knee replacement using the ROSA Knee System at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside.

Using robotic technology to perform joint replacement surgeries assists with surgical precision, accuracy and alignment. This assists implant positioning and ultimately improved outcomes for patients.

When robotic technology was first introduced to operating theatres in Australia some five years ago, it changed the surgical landscape for orthopaedic surgeons.

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside CEO, Mr Oli Steele said, ‘We are honoured to be working alongside world-renowned doctors. Many are pioneering new techniques and are at the forefront of enabling technologies to support best outcomes for those entrusted in our care. As part of our multi-million investment, I am proud to be able to provide Surgeons with the complete suite of surgical robotic technology available to us in Australia.”

The addition of the new ROSA Knee System means St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside now offers the largest mix of robotic technologies to surgeons in comparison to any other private hospital in Queensland.

This is not the first time St Vincent’s has invested in robotic technology. The hospital launched its orthopaedic robotic program in June 2015 after investing in the Mako robotic system. Starting with robotic partial knee replacement surgery, the hospital’s orthopaedic program rapidly expanded over the following two years to include robotic surgery for total hip and total knee replacement surgery.

In May 2016, orthopaedic surgeons at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside performed Australia’s first robotic total hip replacement utilising the Mako robotic system. In February the following year, they were the first to perform Mako robotically assisted total knee replacement surgery in the state.

In July 2020, the hospital celebrated its’ 1000th orthopaedic robotic procedure performed using the Mako robotic system.

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside has significantly invested in new and emerging technologies over the past five years. This comes as part of the hospital’s commitment to delivering excellent care and advancing its innovative and technological services.

The hospital’s most recent investment in the new ROSA Knee System to enhance and grow its orthopaedic robotic program is evidence of this commitment.
