In memory of Peter Howard

The entire St Vincent’s organisation would like to express its condolences at the passing of A/Prof Peter Howard, a former and highly-regarded Trustee of Mary Aikenhead Ministries (MAM).

Under Mary Aikenhead Ministries, a group of Trustees govern the many health, education and social service initiatives established and developed by the Sisters of Charity in Australia. As one of the organisations founded by the Sisters, St Vincent’s and our network of hospitals, aged care, research, and virtual and home health services come under the MAM umbrella.

Peter served as a Trustee from May 2019 to October 2023.

Peter lived his values. His deep Christianity compelled him towards efforts to support and stand alongside people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

For example, during his 33 year tenure at the Australian Catholic University, he helped establish the Clemente program in Australia which offers people experiencing disadvantage and social isolation the opportunity to pursue tertiary education.

Peter was a strong and long-standing friend of St Vincent’s. As a great admirer of the Sisters’ legacy, he took a keen interest in our organisation and the diversity of our work, particularly our range of services for marginalised and disadvantaged individuals and groups.

He was a constant and welcome presence in our hospitals and aged care homes as he looked to gain a deeper understanding of our work by meeting our people and seeing their efforts first-hand.

We express our deep sympathies to Peter’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen

Better and fairer care. Always.

In a rapidly transforming world, St Vincent's has created a refreshed vision and strategy to help shape Australia's health and aged care future.
