A proud history
St Vincent's Health Australia is the nation's largest not-for-profit Catholic health and aged care provider. Spanning the eastern seaboard, St Vincent's Health Australia is a clinical, research and education leader working in private hospitals, public hospitals and aged care services.
From the health services established by the Sisters of Charity in 1855 at Wolloomooloo in Sydney, St Vincent's Health Australia has grown to encompass a diverse range of health services including acute medical and surgical services, emergency and critical care, aged and subacute care, diagnostics, mental health, correctional health, palliative care, residential care, research and education. Through its growth and development, St Vincent's has remained proudly faithful to its Catholic identity and vision: Working together for healthier communities... for the love of Christ.
A new era in leadership
St Vincent’s Health Australia operates under the direction of the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries (TMAM). TMAM was established by the Sisters of Charity of Australia on 1 July 2009 to continue their work in health, education and welfare services. The name Mary Aikenhead Ministries was adopted in tribute to the foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mother Mary Aikenhead. Inspired by her extraordinary example, St Vincent’s Health Australia and TMAM are working together to continue to bring this great tradition of service to all in need of care. Following a review of its governance arrangements in 2010, St Vincent’s Health Australia has adopted a new leadership model to further our efforts in health and aged care in the coming years. Historically, St Vincent’s Health Australia has been well served by a state-based operational model with independent boards in each region. Building on this strong foundation, St Vincent’s Health Australia has now established a single board and enhanced group executive team to lead its operations. We believe that in creating one board and an expanded group executive team reporting to the Group CEO, we are well placed to meet emerging needs in health care, ensure robust governance, deliver excellence in clinical services and take advantage of operational efficiencies arising from greater collaboration and cooperation across the regions.
Through its health and aged care services, St Vincent's Health Australia operates more than 2,600 hospital beds, 1,100 aged care places, employs over 14,000 staff, works with over 2,500 medical practitioners, and draws on the talents of over 1,300 generous volunteers. Each year we care for more than 250,000 inpatients and provide over a million episodes of ambulatory care.
